Chirk Bank to Llangollen Basin - 1 lift bridge, 9 miles, 5.75 hours

We set off just after 8:00 hoping for the dry weather in the morning that had been forecast - they got it wrong again!!  It was dry to start then the rain came, we pulled over had a cuppa and then set off again as it had stopped - not for long!!!  So we decided to just keep going, our wet weather gear was wet, so what the heck.

The canal hugs the side of the hill and it is really weird seeing houses below you on the right hand side and above you on the left hand side.

There are 2 tunnels the Chirk and the Whitehouse both are only wide enough for 1 boat, you can see the end but they are not exactly straight, so a bit of a challenge to stop By The Way banging onto the side especially as the flow of canal is relatively strong now.

At Chirk you cross the Aqueduct just before entering the tunnel.

We pressed on towards the main event the breath taking Pontcysyllte aqueduct that crosses the river Dee at Trevor, you could describe it as a very long, very high up, tin bath for canal boats but that would be such an understatement!

As you can see Rodney picked up a random women going across the aqueduct - once a tart always a tart :-)) (sorry it's a bit out of focus)

It is amazing to think that this fantastic engineering feat was built so long ago and all by hand.

We then turned left onto the final section of the Llangollen canal.

This final stretch is very narrow, in a couple of places it is only wide enough for one boat.

We arrived at the basin (map link for Jason), you usually have to pay £6 a night to moor, with a max 48hr stay, but it is free from 1 November and you get free electric hook up can't be bad. Those of you that know how careful Rod is with money will appreciate how happy he is to have free electric!

We were spoilt for choice as to where to moor!

Just as I was about to press the publish button another boat has arrived, we are no longer alone!
